Literature Text

Thunder roared as lightning pounced across the night sky. The rain drops pelted the trees like tiny bombs. A lone wolf darted between the trees, as he headed towards a large shrine in the hazy distance. The lightning struck a tree just ahead of him, but before it could block his way, a massive pillar of rock burst from the ground, almost as fast as the lightning, and knocked it the other way. As it collapsed, groaning in agony, the wolf stopped and quickly said, "I'm sorry, brother", before moving on. He soon reached a building. As there was another flash of lightning, he saw every detail of the building. It was built out of marble, which seemed to glow now with its sheen made by the rain. Stained-glass windows with striking colours vividly depicted ancient heroes and unrelenting demons. An ominous, solid door made of thick wood stood looming over him. "This must be the place then," he said to himself, "time to find what I came here for." He looked straight ahead, and was enveloped by a bright, golden light. When the light faded, a man stood in his place. He had blonde hair, emerald eyes and black robes on. A bronze shield covered his right arm, and an empty sword sheath on the right-hand side of his belt. He pushed the door of the building open, and as he did there was a hideous screech of rusting metal. The place had evidently not been entered for a long time it seemed. Dim candlelight filled the room before him, and he saw a plaque, with ancient symbols engraved into it. He walked over, and read it out loud. "Here lie the seven swords of the Elementals, once wielded against the forces of evil, to bring order to Salamaia and piece the heart of darkness." He looked ahead of him. Six swords stood frozen in pedestals arranged in a semi-circular shape stood before him. One pedestal however, was empty. He didn't seem to notice its lack of presence however. They gleamed in the dim candle light, each one calling for him to rescue them from the prisons they'd been cast into. He instantly saw the thing he'd come looking for. One of the swords, which had an elegantly carved blade of celestial steel, a hilt made of shining gold, covered in lines of iron which ran through it like veins and a large sapphire, which glowed ominously, in the lower part of the blade stood out in the dark room. There was another ancient symbol on the gem, which he could read as "Water". He stood, gazing at the sword for a few seconds, gripped by terror. This sword had been calling to him in his dreams. He closed his eyes and pictured the dream. In it, he had seen a beautiful, glowing woman who appeared celestial, the sword, and thousands of demons slowly closing in on a small group of people standing who fought them off. What had worried him was that he was one of these people. "Oh spirit, who desecrates my dreams, why do you show me such events?" He said, as if questioning an accomplice who was not present. He opened his eyes, and grasped the sword in his powerful hands. He pulled upwards with all his might and was enveloped by a blinding light. His thoughts were blotted out by thousands of screams, roars and snarls that dashed through his head. Among all this, he heard a deep, booming voice cry out, "With every passing second I become stronger! Soon, they will not stop me!" Then, the light and noise faded. He stood, and saw the pedestal before him empty. He looked down at his left hand, and saw the sword in it. He raised it up to look at his new sword. It was incredibly light, even though it had the appearance of being heavy. He positioned himself into a pose, ready for battle, and took a few cautious swings. The sword's elegance made him feel as if it were a part of his arm, as opposed to a tool held by it. He came to a stop, and looked at it again. "Soon," he said "I shall discover the secret behind my dreams. I will find out why Lady Destiny has brought me here. Soon Angelo, the legendary Wolven swordsman will destroy all demons!"
This is the interlude at the end of the first chapter of my novel, where the character Angelo, is introduced to us. Angelo is not one of the four main characters, but does help them a lot throughout the series.
